Thermopylae – Fiery Gates of Transition
This work explores my interaction with the land of Thermopylae, an area of historical, mythical and spiritual significance since ancient times. A narrow band of land that connects the North with the South of Greece, a point of strategic importance and once a battlefield but also, a sacred place since antiquity, connected to Hades, Hercules and the hot springs that still flow there, which the god Hephaestus created for the hero’s recovery.
The passage of Thermopylae which directly translates to Hot “Gates” – holds symbolic significance. The spring water, freely rising from the earth – at the time seen as a divine gift – was considered therapeutic for the body and soul, while the nebulous landscape was perceived as a Gate to the Underworld. This liminal passage through the underworld evokes strong subconscious images, warriors and once fought battles, directly clashing with the serene atmosphere of the medicinal hot-springs. Sacrifice and Transformation. Conflict and healing. All occurring simultaneously inside the human psyche, an archetype of the war within and the potential of healing within the conflict.
Today, the dominant narrative focuses mainly on the famous battle of 480 BC, but the mythological and mystical depth of the place as a conduit/gate to other states of consciousness, and its healing potential remains less recognizable.
The repeated geological transformation of the landscape, the echoes of ancient battles once fought and the continuous influx of refugees in the area – combined with the smell of sulfur, creates an altered perception of time an “in-between”, dreamlike state, bordering between visible and invisible, evokes memories and feelings that support change and transformation.
This project-inspired by a dream- evolved into a personal journey of rediscovery and reconnection with deeper aspects of myself. Through a poetic photographic language, archives and texts, my intention is to create a bridge between past and present and convey the different types of energies manifesting simultaneously through the “aura” of this locus as an opportunity for transformation and healing, in this time of transition, with the ‘war within’ being the main driving force in the journey of humanity.
